A spot-bellied little animated bluebird flutters against a garden backdrop of plants and mulch. His ancestors may have been the helpmates of Cinderella, Disney’s 1950 movie, but there are some big differences. He’s starring in Lovebirds,a short movie being shot with new techniques to push forward the boundaries of three-dimensional film.

Lovebirds, a mix of animation and live action by Toronto company Starz Animation, is the showcase production of the Toronto-based 3D Film Innovation Consortium, a York University initiative that has brought academic researchers and filmmakers together to explore the burgeoning world of 3D filmmaking to achieve better results. Crosstalk harms 3D realism

TVBEurope.

Researchers at Canada’s York University claimed to have demonstrated a link between the amount of crosstalk involved in 3D displays and the realism of the stereoscopic effect. Crosstalk, in which separate left or right eye images ‘leak’ into each other, is a phenomenon that occurs in all 3D cinema projection and 3D TV displays.

To minimise such visual distortions, crosstalk should be kept at levels of four percent or lower, the study recommends. Currently few systens have crosstalk below 4 percent.

Previsualization for stereo 3D at SiRT Conference

3D FLIC partners present at SiRT‘s Previsualization and Virtual Production Conference – February 24/25 on day 1
3:00 – 3:25:
Previsualization For 3D: A case study
This presentation will explain how previsualization was used in pre-production and principal photography for Starz Animation’s new short, Lovebirds, which combines live action and cg elements.  To meet tight budget and schedule constraints Starz used stereoscopic previs  techniques extensively to solve technical and production challenges proactively and to minimize creative exploration on set.  Decisions regarding set design and construction, camera rigging, shooting schedules, and stereo cinematography were mostly driven by data gathered in the previs process.

Lovebirds is an innovative new hybrid stereoscopic short being produced by Starz Animation Toronto in collaboration with the 3DFlic initiative, a collaboration between leading filmmakers and top research scientists to bring a new stereoscopic experience to the screen.
