Toronto’s York University partners with Canadian film industry for 3D consortium

A team of filmmakers, vision scientists and psychologists has raised over CDN$1.4 million in funding (including CDN $436,000 from the Ontario Media Development Corporation) for its 3D FLIC program. 3D FLIC is a two-year collaboration with assorted Canadian film industry partners intended to spur on more 3D film production in Ontario and the greater Toronto area. Teams of filmmakers at York, led by Professor Ali Kazimi from its Faculty of Fine Arts, will work with film industry members and the Canadian Film Centre to develop 3D scenes and films, while vision researchers and psychologists in York’s Centre for Vision Research will then use the material to conduct tests exploring how people perceive and process the images. The filmmaking teams will then use that information to refine their films, and the knowledge gained is also expected to aid in creating better post-production technologies for 3D filmmaking. Among the industry partners taking part are Cinespace Film Studios, 3D Camera Company (3DCC), Starz Animation Toronto and Saw VII Production Canada, Inc.
